What kind of movie are we making?
The genre of our film is romance comedy. We debated about what kind of genre we should do and ended up settling on romantic comedy. Some of the group members weren't that happy about that choice, but it's ok we'll work with it. The introductions of rom coms don't rally have a lot of action in them. Mostly introduce the characters, give a little bit of plot information by showing the settings and maybe having voice over to fill in any blanks that the setting or character dialogue ca't tell us
The Genre and Tittle conventions
Romantic Comedies or "rom coms" have many conventions that go into them, some being:
-Containing light hearted humor
-Having the idea that true love can over come any obstacle
-Screenwriters and Directors making it obvious that the two main characters were meant for each other
(aka sending hints with them liking the same thing or constantly bumping into each other)
-Having the classic "girl meets boy" scenario
- Seeing the entire film from the females perspective
-Finding love in unnatural places
-Going through difficult obstacles to develop love and trust
-Having the stereotypical upbeat music ( like something from maroon 5)
-The men showing late in the shows
-Using low-key lighting to give a more romantic feeling
-Using high-key lighting to show the light hearted side of the show/movie
-Will sometimes involve a break up
- Including the typical hero, princess, the villain, the side kick, and the princess' father
-Easily knowing the characters personality from their clothes
There are also conventions that exist in the movie title or poster. Like the title needing to connect to the genre of the film, or Making sure the title sets the tone of your movie. The poster will most likely involve some kind of red dress (or something red in general), the two main characters leaning back to back or shoulder to shoulder either on each other or on a wall. They could also be sitting next to each other on a bench or a couch. The two of them will most likely be crossing their arms while frowning. And if the man isn't doing that then, he will probably be shrugging his shoulders or have his hands in his pockets.
Common settings for Rom Coms
Romantic comedies need a place for ll that drama and romance to happen. Rom Coms that are targeted towards teen normally take place at a university or a high school. Some times at a party as well. If not targeted at teens specifically then they take place in cities like New York or Paris. It can be a holiday as well. Ones like Christmas and Valentines day are popular. Weddings are also another holiday/location.
Who I want to Watch my Movie
My movie is going to be targeted towards young teens and women. Romantic comedies usually grab the attention of the female population but even more so the young teens to young adult range. Women are more in touch with their emotions and can relate to most of the stories that rom coms tell. Women are more likely to see themselves as the main character as the watch movie. Most women also want to find a good man or true love. The actors for romantic comedy movies are normally pretty young (like between 15-25 years old) so a teen or young adult could easily get dragged in to the story as the might be able to relate to the main character. To get them to watch my movie I'm going to need to cast a nice looking, young actor for both the male and female main characters.
How different stereotypes Represented
Rom-Coms like any other movie represents different people differently. For some movies the woman are the powerful ones who make the decisions. On the other hand, some movie show the male as the powerful lone wolf who doesn't need help. In romantic comedies, women are going to be white, cisgender woman. They will be a small town girl with intimacy issues. She will be victimized, submissive and end up in a heterosexual relationship. The men are stereotypically the male best friend who ends up with the girl in the end, the cheating boyfriend, the ultimate bachelor, the jock who is super dumb, the alpha male who ignores or mistreats his wife, or the bad boy who eventually turns good because of the love from the good girl. There isn't a lot of diversity among the men or women but that not surprising.
